POSTED NOV 18
NEW ENGLAND DIRT
TRACK SERIES
AWARDS BANQUET
Oct 22, 2011

22 years since Sideways Promotions was started. It seems like a few months ago we were celebrating our 20th anniversary. In some ways time flies by and others it creeps along. Reporters ask how old a young rider is and usually I guess low. I thought he or she was 11, not 13 or 14. With Shane Narbonne around more and Cory Hildebrand showing up one day it puts things more in perspective of how long we’ve been at it. Aaron Creamer was a mentor to Shane, Cory and many others. Aaron’s mentors were Roger Durkee, Andy Segalini, Ken Coolbeth, Jason Fletcher, Keith Jacobsen and many others. The experienced teaching the young riders how to be not only a better rider but a better person off the track also. We’ve seen the riders and the racers, the ones with the fire in their eyes and the desire to win. Some of these need a little taming once in a while but that’s ok. Fast or slow doesn’t matter, it’s their desire and enthusiasm to ride that keeps the mentors, promoters and track staff coming back year after year. These kids are keeping us young!
In 2000 when the vintage races were being held at Gunstock Ski area during Laconia, we got to meet so many stars from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Dick Klamfoth multi time Daytona BEACH winner, Joe Leonard, Ed Fischer and the New England riders were all there, Whitey Anderson, Joe Bolger, Harold Boyagin, Walter Balchunas, Dick Gariepy and of course Ben Campanale. Ben was a Worcester Ma native who won Daytona on the beach course in 1938 and 39. Leo Castell owner of the Motorcyclist Post knew Benny and that’s how the Annual Ben Campanale Laconia ½ Mile was named. The first year Benny showed up along with Dick Klamfoth and crew, he was a frail man. The second year he was getting interviewed, pictures taken and telling stories from 1939 like it was yesterday! To see those 70 or 80 year old men lined up, some on their old race bikes, was awesome. The fire was in their eyes and they were happy to be on a track again.
That’s why we do what we do. Yogi Hildebrand and Kevin Clark have donated their time to do a Youth School for about 14 years. Kevin raced along with myself, Yogi, Dick Mitchell, Tina Perrault and others. He flagged NEDTS for many years before being hired by Formula USA Series and now The AMA National Dirt Track Series traveling the country. His favorite day of the year is working with the kids on their youth school.

Charlie and June Elliot owned Canaan USA Speedway when we started Sideways in 1989. Charlie was 74 years young then. Our agreement was one thing “we either both make money or we both loose money.” With that we shook hands and his grip was like a 25 year olds. They really liked all the bike races and treated us like gold. I know there was nights Charlie lost money but he wouldn’t talk about it. I spoke with Charlie and June last week wishing him Happy Birthday, he’s turning 95. He’s bumming a little bit because he’s having trouble getting around. The man could and did build what ever he needed at the five race tracks he built over the years. When he turned 90 he was so excited to tell me about the new wire feed welder he just bought. Talk about acting young! We’ve worked with many track owners and promoters over the years which all have been great people, but Charlie and June were by far the best.

Racers and promoters have a lot in common, the passion and desire are there, just focused differently. I’m very proud of all of Sideways Promotions crew, they take their job seriously which relates to rider safety. Shawn Perrault has stepped up to cover for his dad and doing a great job. Think about Tom & Jason. You riders wanted a bigger track so Bill, Craig, Ted and Jack worked hard to make it happen. We take pride in giving you the best surface we can, believe me when I say that a poor track bothers me more than you. We are not perfect, but the nights the track stays together, little or no crashes, everybody’s smiling at the trophy presentation, those days make promoting worth while.
Besides, it keeps us young!

Special thanks to Wachusett Brewery, Bettencourt Honda/Suzuki & Bazaaz for their support.

POSTED OCT 25
After mother-nature was ahead two to nothing in the rain out department last month, anticipation was high for good weather at the Dave B Classic Short Track and TT. She gave us fits during the week with two days of rain but the track crew at WVR stayed ahead of her with pumps and hoses. The day of the race, just before practice started we had a fifteen minute downpour. The track crew went to work to make it race able. While it wasn’t the perfect track we wanted it did word out to be safe and produced some great racing.

Ninety two entries from New England, New York, Pennsylvania and Florida showed up to pay tribute to Dave Bettencourt. The night was run as Dave would have liked it, limited classes with exciting handlebar to handlebar racing. Jane Wood, Dave’s girlfriend and his brother’s wife Tina organized a Dash for Dave with five autographed pictures of Dave racing. The big surprise of the night was during the intermission and raffle drawing that the family and Jane sprinkled some of David’s ashes in turn two. Mark Bettencourt’s comment was, “We’re sprinkling a bit of David down low and inside right where he liked to race.” Many hard core Bettencourt fans made the almost two hour trip up and back on their street bikes regardless of the cold weather.

After a brief downpour and track work the modified dirt karts were sent out for practice and to work the track in. The twelve experts went out next and struggled on a really greasy track. The expert’s feedback was to give extra practice laps and the track was getting better with use. A decision was made to run more practice than the kart heat race at which point we would harrow up the track a couple of inches to hopefully get some dryer dirt. It was a very risky decision but we thought it would work. The Dino and 50cc kid classes struggled a little by the third race of the 70 to 110cc Youth it was coming in good. The open pro had two heat races which was a preview to the main event. In the first heat race #14 Jeff Swensen lead from start to finish beating #98 Roger Durkee #59 Jake Constantine and #65 Cory Texter. Jeff has been on a roll this year winning three NEDTS championships. The top three riders also qualified for the Dash for Dave. The second heat was one by #17u Kyle Marble over hard charging #57u Asa Irish and out of retirement Bryan McKenna.

During the emotional intermission the track crew went to work dragging and rolling the surface to prepare for the “Dash for Dave.” It was decided the Karts polished the wet clay and brought the moisture up making the trak slick and dangerous for bikes. The Kart guys agreed to running the last oval race. The six riders lined up with Durkee getting the hole-shot followed by Swensen, Constantine, Marble, Irish and McKenna. Second lap Constantine took over 2nd from Swensen while Durkee pulled a few bike lengths out front. Despite the tight racing behind Durkee, the results after 9 laps were Durkee 1st, Constantine 2nd and Jeff Swensen 3rd. The tight action in the dash was a preview of things to come.

The Vintage class always has an array of cool bikes. Bryon Dailey took the hole-shot over Jim Durkee on his 450 Honda Twin followed by 2010 Vintage Champion Mark Methe on his Husky. It took 2 laps for Mark to get in the lead and pull away for the win. Bryon Dailey is 2nd followed by Jim Durkee 3rd and Bobby Bettencourt 4th.

The 70-110cc 4 Stroke Youth first lap was lead by local youngster Alec Hart with C.J. McAdams and best friend Bobby Bettencourt behind him. It took several laps for Bobby to take the lead which he held to the finish. McAdams was 2nd followed by 2011 Mark Dickens Most Improved Rider Award winner Elizabeth Tinker for 3rd.

The Born to Be Wild class is age 58+ and features some great guys that still enjoy getting sideways. Alan Niles on his 250 2 Stroke Honda jumped out to an early lead over Rick Oberst, Earl Durkee and Class Champ Dave Austyn. Lap 5 Austyn worked his way through the pack to take the lead over Niles. Lap 8 Oberst got around Niles for 2nd place with Niles finishing 3rd, Earl Durkee 4th and Jack Elliott 5th.

The Open Pro, 12 riders, $980 purse with a 15 lap feature. Asa Irish took the lead with Durkee, Marble, Jake Constantine, McKenna, Minor, Mitchell and Cory Texter 10th from the penalty line. The pack was tight with riders pushing and shoving to get to the front. Six laps into the main, Constantine made his move. Asa and Durkee left a very small opening coming to turn 1 and Constantine took advantage going from 3rd to 1st. As the laps wore down, Jeff Swensen was solidly in 4th with Marble 5th and Cory Texter worked his way to 6th. The checked flag flew with Jake Constantine winning, Durkee 2nd, Asa Irish 3rd, Jeff Swensen 4th, Cory Texter 5th and Kyle Marble 6th. The Dave B Classic Open Pro Class was the best race ever at Wachusett Valley Riders Club, it truly was a classic.

We had 16 then 18 riders signed up for the 50 lap tt which was pandomonian before the start. Originial plan was to start no more than 20 in the main and have 2 qualifiers then 4 rows of 4 for the feature. With only 18 riders we give them 5 laps of practice,Then let them go. Trying to line up 18 hooligans when everybody wants a front row start was impossible at that point. When there was roughly 3 rows I told sean to let them go! A crash in turn 1 brought out the red flag and then I realized. 18 riders, wet track we could be here all night restarting! A promoters decision was made while everyone loosely lined up. Start the race and unless somebody is really hurt, keep racing! Jake Constantine took the early lead with Kory Texter on a borrowed 110 in second. Craig Starzynski, Dick Mitchell, John McDonald and many others close behind. Everyone fell down at least once. About lap 42 Texter took over the lead to take the win over Jake Constantino with Dick Mitchell 3rd, Craig Starzynski 4th and John McDonald 5th

Overall, it was a great day of memories, seeing old friends and showing off restored bikes. Hell yes, it’s coming back next fall with some improvements, bigger & better!

First off I want to thank everyone for their efforts to make a safe track.
It's not very often that mother nature beats us but Saturday she won. We
went to the track Sunday and it wouldn't have been safe on that day either.

Years past we built in a rain date at the end of the season for such
circumstances. I know hearing from many mothers, how the families schedule
most of their plans around the racing schedule. To add another date or
points race this late in the season just won't work.

The NEDTS Awards banquet will be Saturday oct 22 at WVR weather permitting.
Riding will start at 11, dinner at 1 followed by awards and more riding.
Sideways will supply the beef, hot dogs/hamburgers, side dishes are
appreciated. In case of all day rainy weather, an alternate indoor location
will be announced. Tickets are $15 each, under 4 free. We need a head count
by oct 8 to plan on food and supplys. As always, there will be a raffle with
cool stuff during the day. A bocce court and horse shoe pit will be setup.
Is there interest in a couple of egg contests teaming a parent and child?

Oct 23 is wvr's year end swap meet and show. The swap meet is for any motor
vehicle, riding gear, tools, parts etc. This is something we can build on to
make an annual event. $2 entry, $10 a vendor spot.

I'm proud to announce that Aaron Roof will be running Karts only events
every other weekend at WVR next year from May to October. You people have
helped to improve the track immensely and the extra income will be welcomed.
The Roof family and Sideways Promotions have worked very well together in
the past. Kart questions 603-762-1519

The Dave B Classic Short Track & TT on October 15 will be, like the man, a
classic event. Originally planned around the end of the AMA National Dirt
Track Series to include the top riders as Coolbeth, Johnson, Weidman, Lewis
etc, an additional date added in Pomona California slightly changed the
plans. Even with a reduced purse several Nationally ranked riders will trek
to Wachusett Valley Riders Club in Winchendon MA to pay tribute to The
Bettencourt's support of motorcycle racing for over 50 years.

The day starts off at noon with a Vintage Bike display, which may have rare
restored RS 600 and 750 Honda dirt trackers. There will be a wall to display
your favorite Bettencourt pictures along with a gathering of Bettencourt
racers dating back to the late 60's. Participants are encouraged to sell any
vintage parts they have for no extra fee. The afternoon will be full of
food, fun and reminiscing.

Practice will start at 4:30 p.m. with 9 classes on the oval dirt track. With
$500 plus a 100% pay back pro purse, it should be about $1,500. There are 5
signed Dave B pictures, 4 to raffle off with all proceeds to a "Dash For
Dave" and the 5th will go to the dash winner. National #65 Corey Texter from
Lancaster Harley-Davidson in PA along with 2 buddies will be coming. Several
pros from New York have expressed interest in wanting to take the cash from
our New England hot shoes. At press time, rumors of some riders coming out
of retirement are being talked about. A confirmation of pro riders will be
on the website. Classic Bettencourt trophies will round out the night!

The race that has everyone talking is the 50 lap 4 stroke TT race. The last
race of the season will feature air-cooled 4 strokes from 100 to 160cc.
While it's a minimal purse, it's about the bragging rights. Qualifying for
this 20 rider main event will be tough. A 50 lap race will be about a half
hour of flat out competition. We intend to make this a traditional end of
the season celebration of Dave Bettencourt and the Bettencourt family.

Gates open at 10:00 am, adults $10, kids age 10-15 $5 and under 10 always
free. Classes of oval: 4-6 and 7-8 50CC Stock, 70-110 4 stroke youth, 85
youth, Amateur, Vintage, Open Pro $, Seniors age 47+, Born to be Wild age
58+. The Big One 50 lap Mini 4 air cooled 4 Stroke TT -$ smooth tires only.
Rain date October 16

The 6th. Annual Aaron Creamer Memorial Race was a great night paying tribute to our friend and former professional racer. The success was due to the fact of a couple of sponsors stepping up to the plate. The John Haymond Law Firm ran radio ads in the Springfield, MA area for the week prior to the race. Dexter and the Haymond Law Firm promotional team complete with two beautiful assistants handed out information and mingled with the enthusiastic crowd. Rol Cesaroni editor and owner New England Biker News was there handing out his newspaper and taking pictures for the next edition. Their contributions added to the electricity of the night as Sideways Promotions paid 200% payback in the 450 Pro class. A retired racer, but still enthusiast rode in on his Harley Davidson and promptly through another $50 to the purse. Thank you Al Merchant.

97 entries signed-up making it the largest turnout of the year so far. With Whip City Raceway and Westfield, MA closing, the dirt kart racers have found a new home at WVR. The combination of the karts and bikes makes for a very diverse and exciting night. While word spreads about all the upgrades to the track and facility, the riders are anxious to race for the special Aaron Creamer trophies given out every year. With most of the extended Creamer family in attendance, a tribute to both Aaron and his sponsor Dave Bettencourt, was made by announcer Jay McGrath.

The racing was hot and heavy in all classes and only a few minor spills happened all night. Everyone likes it when the ambulance attendants don’t move and just watch the races. The three professional classes, Sportsman, 450 Pro and Open Premier had the best handle bar to handle bar racing WVR has seen all year. 1st year AMA pro rider Kyle Marble won 2 out of the 3 classes, but no without a fight from 15 year old Jamison Minor. The two of them put on a classic short track show. Kyle starts were a perfect 3 for 3 hole shots with Jamison and Jeff Swensen in tow. Rubbing is racing and that motto was put to the test several times in all classes. Kyle took home 1st in the Sportsman and 450 Pro, which the 450 paid 200% payback. Jamison’s revenge came in the Open Premier, the last short track of the night. Kyle led 9 ¾ laps but a slight bobble in turn 4 had Jamison squeeze up the inside for the win. Ragin’ Ricky Moroge won 3 out of 4 classes, the 85, 100 4 Stroke and the 100 TT. The 100 short track veteran rider Joe Seraphin kept the pressure on Ricky finishing 2nd. In the 100 TT it was another veteran, Mike Lovewell pushing Ricky. When I use the term veteran I’m talking guys old enough to be Ricky’s fathers. This is proof that young or old you to can be a flat track hero. Dave Austyn was under pressure all night with Haymond Law as one of his sponsors and he wanted to make them proud with a win. A terrible start in his heat race put him behind leader Rick Oberst and Jack Elliott. Now remember this is the Born to Be Wild class which features riders 58 and older. While there is a lot of self preservation, a trophy and bragging rights are still on the line. It took a few laps for Dave to settle down and when he did he brought his 2010 #1 plate to the front. The feature race Dave wasn’t taking any chances and led flag to flag putting a smile on Dexter and the rest of the Haymond Law crew.

October end of the season races and events: October 1st is the last New England Dirt Track Series points’ event. To add to championship fever it’s a double points race which can easily make or break a riders quest for number one. It doesn’t matter if it’s a four year old or a rider in the Born to be Wild Class which is riders age 58 plus, a number one plate is something you cherish forever.

Saturday October 15th is our Dave B Classic Short Track. The race is in memory of a good friend, competitor and lifelong sponsor. The race will run limited classes showcasing the best dirt trackers the north east has to offer. Even though we are running against the last AMA National in Pomona CA. there will be some national numbers competing in the 450 pro class for a to be determined purse. In addition to the youth, amateur and vintage classes in the big finale, a 50 lap TT race featuring four stroke 100 – 150cc bikes. We’ll qualify 20 bikes to the main event and it will be a free for all, flat out race to the finish since pit stops for gas won’t be needed. Earlier in the day will feature music, vintage bike displays and a flea market.

Sunday October 23 will be the year end “Clean The Garage Out For The Next Project Day”. Guy stuff at its best, riding gear, bikes, cars, race vehicles, race parts, no freakin’ pot holders. We want to make this an annual event in the spring and fall so to get it started vendor spots only $15 and Adult admission is only $2, kids under 16 free. As of press time, kart rentals or an open bike practice may happen.

Dear Riders, Families and Spectators:
Do to circumstances beyond my control, Sideways Promotions and the N.E.D.T.S will no longer be affiliated with Jolly Roger Motorsport Park for the remainder of the 2011 season. This is not a decision I made spur of the moment, but has been brewing since last season. Without going into sordid details, I have argued for an improved and safer surface and other safety issues to protect you riders.
There are other issues that have forced me to do this. I feel bad for the ATV riders, many who I have become good friends with. I wish I could offer more races for you guys and hope to in the future.
I assume Marco will continue to run his races, but again results and points will not be forwarded to N.E.D.T.S. The last race Jolly Roger had on 7/23/2011 will be added to the N.E.D.T.S. points. The breast cancer race scheduled at J.R. for September 24th will be held at WVR Sept 24.
Thank you for your understanding.
I really didn’t want to cutout Jolly Roger but it was something I had to do. If he brings in new clay and we sit down to resolve our issues, I would love go back racing there. Losing a race track is an awful situation. I went through it with Bryar Motorsport Park, now New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Greg and Linda Bryar were running the short track and the downturn in the economy was affecting the bottom line. The experts agreed to give up our purse money and race for trophies to help the situation out. When NHMS was built the only dirt track in New England was gone leaving the closest tracks 4 hours away in New York. While these are two different situations, they all affected the sport.
On the bright side, Wachusett Valley Riders Club is continuing improving the race track and the grounds. A longer race track with new clay, more spectator seating and new fencing is really sprucing the place up. Rider-ship is up and one of the most popular classes is the Quick Chix. These girls racing on small 4 stroke bikes under the motto “6 Wide Racing Big and Small, Let’s save them All”. With all proceeds going to the American Breast Cancer Foundation, so far in 3 races they have raised almost $800. Besides the race entry money the “Chix” are also raising money on their own to be added to the final tally. There are 2 races left in the series for the girls, September 10th and the 24th at the Wachusett Valley Riders Club. The final N.E.D.T.S. points race will be Saturday, October 1st at WVR. 6 Wide racing shirts will be available at all events in V-neck pink and black for girls and black and white for guys. $2.00 for every shirt sale goes to the American Breast Cancer Foundation. Shirts are $15.00.
While the environmental police rescinded the foolish underage laws and bike sizes, there is still more work to be done on the registration of off-road bikes and ATV’s. The information is just being finalized now so please contact your senator and representative now as the hearing will be in September. This bill is very important to keep our riding freedom.
There are some changes to the September/October schedule that I will post next month. I can’t believe the summer is almost over, but fall is the best time for riding and racing. Don’t forget if you are in the Westminster area to swing into the Wachusett Brewery, RT. 2A , Westminster, MA for a tour and taste session. They just tapped a new flavor, Pumpkin and Spice which is a big hit locally.

POSTED JULY 19
Super Sideways Sunday July 24 at The Wachusett Valley Riders Club in Winchendon MA will feature the Slingshot Empire Tour along with the New England Outlaw Quarter Sprints and dirt karts. The Slingshot Empire Tour goes from Virginia to New England throughout the course of the year. These vehicles, which are very popular on the East Coast, are working towards a series in New England for 2012. They are powered by a V-twin Briggs and Stratton engine, have independent front suspension, and rear swing arm style shocks. They are scaled down dirt modified looking vehicles that are larger than karts. This will be the third year the series has come to WVR. Drivers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York are looking forward to racing on the wide smooth clay.

The Quarter Sprints are a club out of southern MA who are very excited to be added to the strictly 4-wheeled show at WVR. They are powered by 13 HP single cylinder motors running a full roll cage and wing. The drivers’ ages range from 25 to 70 with fun being their main rule.

While WVR has always included a kart program, the closing of Whip City Raceway in Westfield MA has brought new drivers and enthusiasm to Winchendon. It should be interesting watching the locals competing against the Whip Drivers.

Wachusett Valley Riders Club, home track of Sideways Promotions, is located on Rt 12 (783 Spring St.) in Winchendon MA. July 24th the gates open at 10am, practice at 12 noon, and the races are at 1pm. Adults $10, youth ages 10 to 15 are $5, and children under 10 are FREE. POSTED JUNE 23
Sideways Promotions and The American Breast Cancer Foundation have teamed up to raise money and awareness in a unique way. The “Quick Chix” are girls racing dirt track motorcycles 5 times throughout the New England Dirt Track Series 2011 season. 100% of the $40 per rider entry fee is donated to the foundation. Unlike other racing series that award year end championships according to points, this again is unique. The top 5 fundraisers will be recognized at the awards banquet in November.
The motorcycles are 80 to150cc 4 strokes racing around a 1/5th mile dirt oval. The “Chix” range in age from 10 to 52 years old in the first race held June 6 at the Wachusett Valley Riders Club in Winchendon Ma. The approval from the ABCF had come the week before but 7 girls lined up to compete raising $280 the first race. With more advertising and awareness future races will draw more competitors and donations for their favorite Chix. Sideways Promotions President Pete Giammalvo explained, “The Quick Chix have been around for many years. Last fall at WVR we ran a impromptu race and it was so much fun. The girls brought up the idea of the fundraiser and 4, now 5 total races were set. Having personally known several friends with the disease, it’s great to contribute towards more research. Realistically, with the girls all raising funds trying to get the #1 plate, I hope to reach a $4000 goal. Quick Chix T-shirts, 6 Wide Racing with the motto: Big and Small, Lets Save Them All will be available the end of July with a portion of the proceeds going to the Foundation.”

Pavement Short Track a Success at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

Déjà vu, Karma and fate all rolled up in a Laconia flyer was sparked up Friday night June 17 for a pavement short track held inside NHMS massive infield. Backup to April 1976 opening practice day for NESTA on the paved oval at Bryar Motorsport Park, now the main sign in building for NHMS. 16 years old, a Triumph 19” front wheel, used pair of Dunlop K70 street tires, my new, used beck arnley leather jacket and my well used 1975 Montesa 125 VA. I was on top of the world. Like the commercial says, “you’ve come a long way baby.”
From coming thru the dirt track ranks as a innocent kid sliding around a paved oval covered with beach sand and drain oil to being hired to promote a new race by a multi million dollar corporation during Laconia, a lot of fun has been had on that hallowed pile of gravel. In no particular order, short track every Saturday night in the 70’s and 80’s, watching the aamrr road races before the short tracks, Johnny Bettencourt, Jerry Wood, the benefit race for me in 1987 after my accident. TZ 750’s, Noduol, VAN SHOWS, AMA nationals, fires, burned golf karts, bikes, trucks and furniture, staging and free camel banners, hangovers and Castrol r bean oil, butler and smith BMW superbikes, scars I still have from crashing in the gravel going off u haul ramps on fire, ted goddards round short, 4 free golf carts to use ALL WEEKEND to pack the round short track in, using a jet dryer to prepare a track instead of grader.
Despite the weatherman’s forecast and a late start we got the show in. After a schedule of practice to start 5:30 we practiced about 6 then started racing at 6:30. With the rain affecting rider turnout the planned 6 classes were changed to 4 races with a combined amt/expert Supermoto. The Amateur class was the first to take AMA’s Dirt Track National starter Kevin Clarks green flag. It was a father son attack on Joe Seraphin as Craig Hall took the win over Joe. Steve Hall was third, succumbing to over heated rear brakes like several others. Imagine coming into a turn and not having any rear brake? Hopefully no one is in front of you so you just go straight.
The 40+ class had a lot of talent and some with plenty of pavement experience. Former National Number 98 Roger Durkee had the field covered with his smooth style on his Wood framed Rotax over Quick Dick Mitchell who overcame brake issues to finish second. Coming out of retirement was Gregg Seraphin taking third.
The Supermoto class run under LRRS rules had some worries about excessive tire wear and is the fun factor worth it? The tire wear was little and the fun factor was so high, the riders want it added to the legend cars every race! These bikes with big sticky slicks and oversize front brakes are more finesse’ but still very exciting. Tyler Sweeny topped the Expert Supermoto over Rick Breen while Trevor Chiappisi beat Chauncey Vierra for second overall in amt. supermoto. These boys will back and guaranteed to bring their buddies.
The Open Pro short track class with no front brakes highlighted what the show was all about. These experienced riders pitched the bike sideways halfway down the straight, tires screeching across the pavement along with a haze of blue smoke pouring off the rear tire. The big thing the riders like about pavement is it’s consistency all night. It doesn’t develop holes and not subject to usual dirt track maintenance. I was outside turn 1 for the Open Pro feature and I know off the start Narbonne and Durkee were I think 4th and 3rd but everyone was jockeying for position. Coming out turn 2 the riders were all over the track, Durkee rolling out high. Asa Irish was way tight trying to drive up the inside and Jeff Swenson using the middle. I lost track of who was passing whom but, Narbonne pulled a lead out with 2 laps to go as Durkee was literally spinning his tire all the way around. Swenson was slightly behind followed by Irish and Mike Hakey. Narbonne took the traditional in your face double checker followed by a victory lap and 5th gear burnout against the pit gate to end the night in a cloud of smoke and cheering fans.
We got the show off for you fans and we know now how the little details of the track work, so we can go from here. I can’t thank my crew, the riders and their families working together to get this show in the history books. You guys and girls always help out but showing up and supporting me when we needed to, you’re the best! Thanks to the officials and crew from New Hampshire Motor Speedway for allowing us to showcase flat track racing. See you next Laconia!

POSTED MAY 20
Jolly rogers canceled for may 21 due to excessive rain

YOUTH SCHOOL is on! Starts at 11am. With a shorter riding day on Sunday,
make sure the kids have a good breakfast and they can snack during the
classroom session about 1
Wvr work day Sunday 10am. There is plenty to do off track.

OK, here's is where we stand.

First, based on many conversations we have a reasonable degree of confidence that the DELE will be addressing the 10 year old age restriction in the 323CMR300 regs. There are a few final hurdles to overcome but they have heard loud and clear from the masses that want this changed. We are pretty sure they will take care of minor issues on spark arresters, sticker locations and light requirements as well. No guarantees but looking very good.

Now, we had a very small window of opportunity to file an ammendment to Chapter 202 with the State Budget, it was filed at the deadline yesterday. This is something that happens regularly to address issues with Bills signed into law previously, we were just short on time. The catch is that it is a one shot deal and if there is any major objection to the ammendments it gets kicked out and has to go thru the full legislative process. For that reason we distilled down our ammendments to make sure it was pallatable and met our core requirements, we have reviewed this with DELE and have their full support, here is the text:

Mr. Rodrigues moves to amend the bill by inserting the following 3 sections:-

Section__. Section 21 of said chapter 90B, as amended by section 7 of said chapter 202, is hereby amended by striking out the first sentence and inserting in place thereof the following sentence:-

No person under 18 years of age shall operate a recreation vehicle, except while participating in a sanctioned race, rally or event, unless they have successfully completed a recreation vehicle education safety and responsibility course approved by the director of environmental law enforcement.

Section__. Section 22 of said chapter 90B, as amended by section 8 of said chapter 202, is hereby amended by striking out the first paragraph and inserting in place thereof the following paragraph:-

No person shall operate a snow vehicle or a recreation vehicle unless the vehicle has been registered in accordance with this chapter, unless such vehicle is participating in a sanctioned race, rally or event, or is being operated on land owned by the owner of the vehicle, and a registration number assigned by the director is displayed on the vehicle. The registration number shall be painted or by means of a decal or sticker which is firmly attached to both sides of the cowling of the vehicle and located so that both are clearly visible and not obstructed. Off-highway motorcycles without suitable cowling may locate registration numbers on the forward suspension components so as they are clearly visible on both sides of the vehicle. The registration number displayed shall be not less than 3 inches in height and not less than one-half inch in width and shall be in a color that is in marked and distinct contrast to the background to which the number is applied. The registration number shall be maintained in a legible condition at all times. A motor vehicle license or learner's permit shall not be required for the operation of a snow vehicle or a recreation vehicle.

Section__. Section 24 of said chapter 90B, as amended by section 10 of said chapter 202, is hereby amended by striking out the second paragraph and inserting in place thereof the following paragraph:-

No snow vehicle or recreation vehicle shall be operated which emits noxious fumes or makes unusual or excessive noise. No snow vehicle or recreation vehicle manufactured on or after January 1, 1998, shall be operated on publicly-owned property that produces a sound pressure level of more than 96 decibels when measured from a distance of 20 inches using test procedures established by the Society of Automotive Engineers under Standard J1287 JUL98. No snow vehicle or recreation vehicle manufactured prior to January 1, 1998, shall be operated on publicly-owned property that produces a sound pressure level of more than 101 decibels when measured from a distance of 20 inches using test procedures established by the Society of Automotive Engineers under Standard J1287 JUL98.

The summary is this, ORV registration will no longer be required on private property the operator owns or at sanctioned events, you will still need an ORV registration even if you have a street plate if you are offroad but not in an event. Likewise safety traning will not be required if in an event which eliminates issues for non-residents coming to compete. Sound testing will only be applicable to public properties and not be a requirement for vehicle sale. There are a few other items we wanted to address but we felt it increased the risk of being bounced.

THIS IS NOT A DONE DEAL! This will be voted on by the Senate in the next few days so you need to contact your State Senator ASAP! If it does pass the Senate it then goes to the Governor who has line item veto, if we get it to that point we will deal with him next.

The key senators are Sen. Brewer who chairs the budget committee and more importantly Therese Murray who is Senate President and originally filed the Bill.

We are waiting on a Bill # but in the meantime reference Senator Rodrigues ammendment to Chapter 202, I will post the Bill # as soon as I have it.

Now, get off the computer and start CALLING your senators! (Start with Therese Murray first!)

PLEASE CALL AND EXPLAIN THAT WITHOUT THESE AMENDMENTS YOUR FAMILIES RACING ORGANIZATIONS WILL GO OUT OF BUSINESS RESULTING IN LESS REVENUE FOR MA

Dear inserted name ,

This letter is in response to the 90b rules and the added “emergency
provisions”. I’m a 51 year lifelong resident of Massachusetts and a
motorcycle enthusiast for 42 years. Early on in life my parents taught me
about personal responsibility. I was taught to ride a Honda 50 at age 10 by
the father of my neighborhood friends. I had the backing of my parents
including my mother who taught me how to drive a stick shift Toyota at age
10 in our yard. I started ice racing at age 12 on lake whalom in Lunenburg
Ma. I worked for a motorcycle shop in Gardner Ma as a parts washer and
belonged to the Gardner Trail Riders for many years. They ran enduros and
many sanctioned rides teaching the area riders about responsible riding.
1979-1981 at age 19 I ran successful motorcycle ice racing for the City of
Gardner MA Winter Carnival Events. Due to work requirements my promoting
stopped but I raced motorcycles all over the east coast and ice raced cars
for 5. In all of those years of racing I never broke a bone. I raced
motorcycles for 14 years, cars for 5 and broke my neck in a swimming pool,
did I try to have pools banned? NO. Life is dangerous, living life is even
more dangerous! Since 1989 when I started Sideways Promotions we have safely
taught many boys and girls safe riding, sportsmanship, mechanics and even
politics such as this. Sideways Promotions has been hired to promote family
style motorsports events at tracks and fairgrounds around New England.
Several of our kids are now professional racers making a living, I’m damn
proud of them! Let’s step back and compare our business to hockey, baseball,
football etc which injure kids everyday. Don’t you think us people should be
the ones consulted about what is best for our youth?

1996 We started a private riding club in Winchendon ma, Wachusett Valley
Riders. Our particular choice of riding is flat track, basically a smooth
dirt oval. A group of families got together to form a club to train our
youth and adults in a controlled environment. We do run several sanctioned
events a year to help pay the bills.

Registering race bikes used exclusively on private tracks is wrong. The same
with out of state racers. WVRC is a certified, approved atv training site,
if there is a “riding test” why aren’t legitimate tracks used for testing?
To keep motorized vehicles in context, then every golf course should have to
have a junior operators license and register their golf carts. What about al
the concession go-cart tracks in mass? The effects of this bill are far
reaching and if are kept will not only put my 2 business’s out but also most
motorcycle shops and other tracks in MA. The loss of revenue from all of us
residents and out of staters from PA to Canada will be huge. Everyone buys
gasoline which includes the road use tax which for OHV use doesn’t
contribute to road wear and tear. Being a quadriplegic in a electric
wheelchair for 23 years, I have always had neighborhood kids help around the
house. So my very responsible 15 year old can’t use my atv and trailer to do
yard work but legally I can put him on a 25 horsepower 60 inch cut lawn
mower? Please explain to me the common sense of these rules.

COOLBETH GETS A HAT TRICK AT WVR!

Opening day at Wachusett Valley Riders Club in Winchendon MA, Saturday April
30th 2011, was a success. The revamped, safer turns one and two along with
new clay made for the best track in WVR history. 66 riders signed up for
what turned out to be a great night. The racing in all classes was tight and
fast, but 3 time AMA national champion, Kenny Coolbeth, showed everyone the
fastest way around the oval and owned the TT. The “King of Cool” struggled
with slow starts in the heats. Watching Kenny work his way to the front was
the excitement of the evening. 20 year old Shane Narbonne and 15 year old
Jamison Minor showed the 33 year old champ no respect. Neither of the
youngsters were afraid to shut the door on the champ numerous times. There
were several occasions of banging elbows going into the turns. Eventually
Shane went down giving Kenny the win. In the features Kenny had the starts
dialed and lead flag to flag in the 450 Expert, Open Pro short tracks, and
Pro TT. We finally have the TT course design that is more rider friendly and
exciting for the spectators. Watching the pros maneuver the tight left and
right turns plus sailing 40 feet over the jump was a great way to end the
night. With a smaller than normal turnout some classes had to be combined.
Bruce Ward, in the Senior B, and 15 year old Samantha Slingerland, in the
250 Amateur, put on a heck of a race! Side by side for 10 laps with Samantha
trying to pass on the outside while Bruce would pull a bikes length away,
coming out of the turns for the win. The 100 to 160 4 stroke class was a
combination of young and old riders battling it out. Ragin’ Ricky Moroge
went on for the win but the action was hot and heavy behind him. The battle
for 2nd was hard fought between Shane “Flash” Fallon and Joe Seraphin. Flash
was safely in 2nd until lapped traffic and a pack of bikes let Joe squeezed
through for 2nd. The 80 to 160 TT was a different story as Joe Seraphin put
his years’ of experience taking the win over Ricky Moroge. Old age and
treachery usually beats youth & enthusiasm.

Through the hard work of Craig Starzynski and Bill Wilkes using Ted Frost’s
excavator, the reshaping and general cleanup inside the track has really
brightened up the place. Other club members have put up new fences, done
some painting and got both water trucks running. Every year shows
improvements to the track and grounds which I want to thank those involved
with their help.

Don’t forget the upcoming events: May 21st at Jolly Roger Motorsports Park
and June 4th at WVR. The 88th running of the Laconia Motorcycle Rally and
Race Week has an exciting new event. Friday June 17th has a pavement short
track at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with 6 classes of motorcycles racing
on NASCAR turns 1 and 2 than coming back through the infield on a ¼ mile
oval track. With a $1500 pro flat track purse and the LRRS amateur and pro
supermoto class running, it is guaranteed to be a good show. Racing starts
at 6:00pm Friday night. Saturday June 18th everyone heads over to Jolly
Roger Motorsports Park for full classes of motorcycles and ATV’s on the high
banked dirt oval. In the spirit of Laconia, Marco is putting up a 200%
payback in the Open Pro motorcycle class. Practice 4:30pm, races 5:30pm Rt.
10 E. Lempster, N.H., 60 miles from Weirs Beach.

POSTED APRIL 6

Besides the email list, I will be posting on the website and Sideways Promotions facebook page

Work day went well Sunday april 2. it was a very last minute deal because Friday we got 9” of snow. The track is wet, muddy and frozen snow. Kevin Clark and Craig S power washed the grader so it can be shipped to al P for a motor replacement. Dave Austin, jack elliot, ted brisbois and connie cleaned inside and out the trailer plus got everything set to replace the snow fence long rt 12. While it’s to wet now, the push is on to get the 5 loads of clay in by the 17 or 18th so we can grade and pack it. That weekend is the last full one to finish the fencing, painting, brush cutting and general cleanup. Anyone with white waterbase paint, we could use it along with many hands. I will post a list of work items shortly, please sign up for a job. Wachusett Valley Riders is our club, together we can do wonders!

April 23 is “Fan Appreciation Day” at new Hampshire motor speedway which Sideways Promotions we will have a 20x28’ garage to display bikes/atv’s we race, please contact me to bring a vehicle. The show is free for all and runs from 9am-4pm. I have a commitment april 24 in nh so the practice/swap meet at WVR is cancelled.

I want to remind everyone to repack your mufflers. In this day of tracks closing, we have to be aware and pay attention to the maintaining our mufflers. I randomly check bikes and have been notified by the town they have a meter and qualified operator. It saves time and really helps Sideways Promotions out to register your NEDTS before raceday. I spoke with Marco and Sideways Promotions will run keep track of the points and run the awards banquet for 2011. All the ATV riders will need to be NEDTS members. There as 5 or 6 atv guys paid me last year, you will be credited for this season.

For Christmas I recieved 2 great books from Butch Baer. While I already got a Century of Motorcycling volume 1, my lovely wife
Connie got me volume 2 and another cherished book. Class C Racing, The First 10 Years with Woodsie and Frenchy Castonguany. It's a wonderful book filled with pictures and results from 1932 to 1942.While I haven't gotten to read them, I can tell it will be very enjoyable. Butch and brother Tom have done a great job in putting together a large collection of motorcycle books . You can see them all at www.acenturyofmotorcycling.com

Totally New Track Inside The Bull Ring!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, after an ever changing count for dinner, trophies and seating, it all came together Saturday night, November 20 at the Hubbardston Rod and Gun Club for Sideways Promotions 21st Annual New England Dirt Track Series Awards Banquet. 23 classes of motorcycle and atv flat track plus 5 classes of TT awards were given out to 130 competitors and there families.
It was a treat watching the 50cc Youth Champion struggling to carry a trophy taller then him plus hold onto his cherished #1 plate. The special awards are always a tough decision as there are always several candidates for each. The Aaron Creamer “True Grit” Award goes to a rider who never gives up. My favorite quote of Aaron’s is, “I would live in a cardboard box as long as I could race motorcycles.” Dalton Brisbois struggled with ups and downs during the season but showed a level of dedication at the end of the season I’ve not seen in a kid. Along with this award comes a trip to American Supercamp Courtesy of Danny Walker and Steve Creamer. The Nate Sheldon Sportsman of The Year Award started out honoring New England’s 883 class champion back in the 90’s. With the end of the 883 racing, it was changed to the Sportsman of The Year Award. Sheldon’s H-D from Worcester was always involved in racing dating way back before I was born. I got to know the Sheldon family well and Nate was always visiting me, talking about past races. I believe it was 1990 when Nate showed up to show off his Brand New full dressed Harley-Davidson! 80 years young he was then. The Nate Sheldon Award is for someone or a group of people who put that extra effort in Sideways Promotions and the New England Dirt Track Series. Most times the winner(s) go about helping out not realizing the extra effort. Steve and Janet Hall were the recipients of the 2010 Award. They are very active with their kids and grandkids donating time at the track during practice and races. The Hall’s are the first to ask if we need a hand. The Kenny Coolbeth Cross-training Hard Charger Award is something we started last year. It rewards a rider that stands out week in and week out as a top contender. We look into the individuals background and support to determine the winner. Bad Brad Marble maybe his track alias, but he is far from bad. He is a quiet hard riding kid who lets his results speak for him. Through this award that was presented to him by Kenny, Brad receives a free cross-training school in the spring. The New England Dirt Series Most Improved Rider Award is another one that had several candidates to pick from. I watch all the riders over the years and while everyone is racing some are just better than others. Some have talent right off the bat and others it takes awhile. Samantha Slingerland has raced in the Northeast for several years. She has always been kind of mid-pack and her dad always has fun. They headed to Daytona last March and came back with some good results. They headed to Duquion IL for the Amateur Grand Nationals again coming back with impressive results. Those two road trips put her consistently at the front of the pack. The 85cc and 125cc classes are pretty much the same riders and produce the most competitive racing week in and week out all year long. Samantha was right in the mix with all the boys and she definitely deserves the Mark Dickens Most Improved Award.
Dancing commenced with Heidi-Jo and friends, many of the men leaned on the bar bench racing with the festivities ending at 12:30. I want to thank everyone for their help and support on and off the track throughout the year. We have a great group of families and I’m looking forward to next season.

Sunday November 28 I arrived at the track concerned about the half frozen, iced over, 4" mud combo! We put the Expert’s out first and they cruised around quickly getting used to the conditions except one spot. Right after the “junkyard” was a sweeping left turn that was frozen hard as Nancy Pelosis botox face! That shady turn was so slippery and polished that anything more than cracking the throttle would put you on the ground in a second. Some of the novices/amateurs had there own approach to the mud, turn the throttle wide open and give it hell. It didn’t always work but it sure was spectacular!
To the Stateline Riders, you came, you took home some awards & $$$$ and everyone smiled all day long. There was some great racing, some unusual get-offs and thanks to John at the Carriage House for cold beer, hot food and a place to clean our shoes off. While it was great to see so many new faces and again having riders come up and thank me, we need more riders to make it profitable. WVR is going to continue the races thru February. The end of March we will be cleaning up the enduross to get ready for a Kenny Coolbeth Cross Training School in April.

The 2nd Annual Toy Town Enduro X had hot racing on a cool night. The rider turnout was on the low side due to two other major off road events but A new unique course drew praise from all the riders. Last year’s course was very tough and demanding. The new course has a nice flow to it and is easier on the equipment. Don’t get the impression it was easy as pretty much every rider bit the dirt at one time or another.
While the rock garden and the pipe bomb grabbed their share of riders, it was the tire wall that gave everyone fits. It looked innocent enough, 12 stock car tires bolted two high together. The problem was that every time a rider came around they were bent differently each lap. Shift levers, brake levers, foot pegs and cases all got caught slowing everyone down. Once a few pro’s figured it out some riders in the other classes were clearing it just fine.
The Girls and Mini classes were combined and while everyone struggled they didn’t give up. Class winner Jackie Halpa really struggled on the tires and the quick sand turn where Chelsea Huy legs weren’t quite long enough on the tires and the logs to keep from tipping over. Mini class Ben Iacobucci persevered through several crashes to take 1st on his KLX 140.
The Pro race pitted road racer against dirt tracker. Road racer Jeff Wood got the hole shot quickly pulling away from Asa “The Racer” Irish, a professional dirt tracker and several time winner on the flat track oval at WVR who was about 5 seconds behind. As Asa slowly reeled in Jeff, they were handle bar to handle bar bumping all over the track. Lap 10 saw them coming into the rock garden using two separate lines, a slight bobble by Jeff allowed Asa to pull along side heading into the junk yard taking the lead before the loader tires. To add insult to injury Asa roosted Jeff hard on the downside of the tires. Asa was not challenged taking the win, a checkered flag lap with a huge smoky burnout on the log section.
A great big thank you to Jeff Wood and Jason Dokulil for donating time and equipment to make such a great race track! The next event is Sunday November 28th, practice starts at noon and races at 12:30pm. Two more races are scheduled for January and February with dates to be announced. The three winter races will have two unstudded classes, 125 to 250 and 251+. The addition of snow and ice to the course adds a whole new layer of excitement. Throughout these winter events we encourage everyone to bring your own food and drinks to keep warm. Also for spectators, arrive early and see 100% of the track from the warmth of your vehicle. Admission: Adults $10.00, Kids 10-15 $5.00 and always at WVR under 10 free.

POSTED OCT 5
The race that was to be at Brockton October 9 has been moved to WVR and will be the last NEDTS points for 2010. The last oval is going to have all kinds of added excitement. A racers flea market will run all afternoon, clean out your garage! No vendor fee, just gate fee. 2:00 we’ll have a dirt bike rodeo with field games including a 2 up tire toss, barrel race and needle in the hay stack. The gates will open at noon, practice at 4:30 .Due to requests a Chick class will be run the 9th, no racers-just pit tootsies on little air cooled 4 strokes, no membership required. How about a Thunder Clownz Class age 10+! FUN,FUN,FUN

As the dirt track season winds down, the points races get tighter and the action gets hotter. Jolly Roger’s September 11th race proved just that with a large turnout of bikes, quads and spectators. For those that have never been to Jolly’s as it is affectionately called, here is a little history on it. About 15 years ago Roger Gagnon and his two sons Marco and Denny had a dream to build a motorcycle racing facility. Roger was retiring, Marco was in the motorcycle business and Denny in the restaurant business. Together they envisioned a moto cross track besides an oval track with a real sit down restaurant in between. They found a 100 acre parcel with no zoning in East Lempster, NH. A deal was struck and tree cutting commenced. With no formal engineering background after the land was cleared a design was decided upon. The land with its numerous up hills and down hills made a very challenging track. Tucked in the hill was a 1/5 mile oval designed with spectators in mind. Between the two is a 40X80’ restaurant, but the cool part about it is on top of the restaurant are bleachers facing both tracks. While both tracks have seen improvements, parking and spectator viewing have come along. No matter what the event camping is always free. The atmosphere is always laid back and very kid friendly.

With 17 classes of motorcycles and 8 ATV classes there is something for everyone. We have 4 year olds on bikes and quads all the way up to the Open Pro “Jolly Quads” who are the final show of the night. Jolly’s is 20 minutes north of Keene, NH and about an hour from Concord or Manchester, NH. For you dual sport adventure riders, there is a ton of backwoods dirt and pavement roads in all directions. Jolly Roger’s Moto Sport Park Rt. 10 E. Lempster, NH www.jrmoto.com.

There is plenty of winter excitement coming up for the motorcycle enthusiasts in the Northeast. There are plenty of bike shows scattered around. Sideways Promotions has 4 Enduro Crosses planned November, December, January and March. Motorcycle and ATV ice racing should be happening in January and February weather permitting. There are also some new events in the works. By then, its time for Daytona!

Zeke, alias “Bucky Thunder” is always spouting unique Zekeisms which definitely keeps the crowd laughing. Anybody that has heard him announce knows that he really loves his job. One of his favorite sayings is that we put the capital F in Fun. The beginning of July, Sideways Promotions and Wachusett Valley Riders decided to make that happen. Amateur Grand Prix, Expert Dash for Cash, longer races and bigger trophies was the plan. The result is more riders, closer racing and a better show for the spectators.
The 6th Annual Aaron Creamer Memorial Short Track race was a great night honoring our lost friend and brought together people that had not been to the races for a few years. As usual the Creamer family was in attendance and many stories were shared. The 2009 Aaron Creamer “True Grit Award” winner Ragin’ Ricky Moroge gave the Creamer family a thank you plaque and an American Supercamp T-Shirt for sending Ricky to Delaware, Maryland for a super camp school.
As the late J.B. Norris would say, “lets’ go racing.” The Vintage class has produced some great racing and some unique equipment. Gary “Hoppa” LaChance showed up with his well-worn stocked framed Honda FT500 beating the point’s front runners Leo Vadnais and Mark Methe.
The Open Amateur saw a couple of the young lions giving the veteran a run for his money. Bad Brad Marble, who is on fire this year, came in 1st ahead of Rick Seymour. Rick, a double A NETRA rider started riding on the ice last winter and got bit by the roundy round bug. While he needs to learn a little more throttle control he consistently runs up front. 3rd place was CJ Madman McAdams on Craig Evans 250 Kawasaki.
The 50cc youth class is getting new riders every week. To make it fair for the little tikes it’s divided into the 4-6 and the 7-8 on stock bikes. We also have 50cc Senior, which is water-cooled 2 strokes or 88cc 4 stroke Honda 50 size. This race we had 3 kids in the 4-6 and 1 in the 50cc Senior so we ran them together and scored them separate. In the 4-6 class Hayden Paydos was 1st over Brianna “The Hammer” McHugh and Riley Chynoweth in 3rd. Ben Gloddy, who is a new comer this year, gets faster every week. He also stepped up to a 65cc and once he gets the clutch and shifting squared away, he will be running up near the front.
With 6 dirt karts signed up, we divided them into youths and adults. In the Youth class Isaac Peckman was leading Ron Alger III in a wheel to wheel race for 10 laps. Lap 11 coming into turn 3, Alger got down low in the loose dirt bumping Peckman and spinning himself out in the process. This allowed Dalton Brisbois to move into 2nd place, which he held to the finish.
The Adult karts, Carl “older than dirt” Billington, who has been racing karts for over 50 years bested Winchendon native Chris Smith and John Dennecourt. The kart turnout has varied but WVR would like to expand the program with more drivers and classes.
The Sportsman class featuring experts and amateurs competing together was the best race of the night. AMA rider Jake Constantine made the trip out from Selkirk, NY worthwhile as he took home 1st place and the top money. The class featured 7 riders which usually pays 100% payback. As a special bonus in honor of Aaron, Jon Lutzen and his mother kicked in added purse money along with $100 bonus put up by Sideways Promotions. With almost $500 payout the racing was going to be close. Jake had ridden WVR back in May at the Kenny Coolbeth Cross Training School and put that knowledge to good use. Jake commented how great the track was compared to May and would have to change his setup drastically. Jake’s heat race had the crowd in awe as he was all over the track searching for traction in the fastest line. He had a front end push then almost put him down 2 times, only his skill and experience was what saved him. In the feature he got the hole shot and proceeded to gap the field. While his roost all the way around the track from his rear tire was impressive to watch, Bad Brad Marble on his 250 4 stroke was making up ground riding around the bottom. With 2 laps to go, Brad was on Jake’s rear wheel and looking for the lead. Jake rode smart and tight to take the win by less than a bike length.
We run our whole practice heats and features of the oval before we get into our TT program. Basically the TT is a smooth road course with a jump. The AMA National Series has 2 TT’s on their schedule every year. Springfield, IL hosts a TT always on Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend. Peoria, IL has been hosting a TT for decades and is one of the toughest races these professionals ride all year. Back to the WVR TT, the kids love it and they need track time so when they get older they know how to turn right and jump. The most popular class is the 80/160 4 stroke air cooled class. Both kids and adults can enter and they can use any kind of tires. While the young kids have a weight and enthusiasm advantage, the older riders have old age and treachery. This particular night the youth won out with Ragin’ Ricky Moroge and Cody “The Rattlesnake” Cormier beating elder unretired Mike Lovewell on his Ed Longacre built XR100. The Amateur TT is a mix of bike sizes and ages. Usually somebody stalls their bike or catches another wheel and falls so there is always action. Brad Marble was the king of the TT tonight over Joe “The Energizer Bunny” Picardi with TT enthusiast Harlan “Speedy” Hildebrand in 3rd. As Joe Picardi held up his trophy he announced “I’m older than the rest of the field combined.” The trophy presentations have a tradition that goes back to when Aaron was first racing, when you get your trophy you gotta “hold it up!” We make it a point to have an official trophy presentation at every race as a way to end the night with great friends and camaraderie.
This is the new Sideways Promotions and WVR where our focus is on fun and showmanship. While we all are in this economy together, we understand that paying your house bills comes before racing. All forms of racing have seen smaller competitors and fans. Wachusett has been through ups and downs since we opened in 1996. A lot of you know the story, but this is first time I am really putting it out there for the world to see. The town shutting WVR down for 5 years for racing, but not practice was the start of things. Sideways has had good years and bad years but rainy weather at Rochester and Brockton added to WVR debt. The loss of the Harley dealers and other sponsors plus the decline in entries has forced me to look at all options. Last winter was very tight that’s why we ran the EnduroX which we intend to do this fall and winter. So Connie and I know where we stand I’m getting Wachusett appraised as a racetrack and as commercial property. We are not whining or complaining, its business and we need to look out for our future. In looking back at all the great times, great races along with fans and riders it has been a wonderful time. Together, all of us have put New England and its riders on the map. WVR has been the training facility and it would be a great loss for the upcoming riders and families.
The beginning and through the middle of the season my enthusiasm just wasn’t there and it bothered me. New riders and their families, new ideas and a lot of thinking have got me back on track. While the financial issues are still there, I started working on new tracks and events for 2010. I’m sure everyone notices that Wachusett is looking better and the track is in better shape. A few of us are talking about a small building which brings us to the next level. A local block company is donating all of the block for us. Between everyone we have every trade more than covered. I have mentioned to a few of the old timers about a museum showing New England motorcycle racing history. My collection of things goes back to the late 60’s
We are building a new website which is sorely needed. I’ve got several sponsorship proposals almost ready to send. Sideways Promotions has a lot to offer for next year even if half of my plans work out. This was not an easy letter to write and publish. I started one 2 months ago and just could not finish it. I’m not a quitter, never have been. This also isn’t a plea for money, it’s about laying out a plan and having the support of not only riders but fans and dealerships who want to see dirt track rise back up in New England. I’m open for thoughts, comment good or bad! Email me at peterg11@verizon.net or send me an anonymous snail mail at Sideways Promotions, 95 Sargent Rd, Westminster ma 01473

The joint venture of Aaron Phinney’s New England Mini Moto Series and Sideways Promotions Mini classes was a rousing success! 61 entries on everything from 50cc’s to 150cc’s and two riders, one from California and another one from Sweden added to the excitement. The New England Mini Moto Series is for all ages of riders on small bikes. They mainly run on paved kart road courses but later this year they plan to race on a real Super Moto track, which is a combination of dirt and pavement. August 21st at Wachusett was a dirt oval and dirt TT. While the Sideways Promotions riders had a definite edge, the NEMM guys caught on quick. The promised 15 lap heats and features were cut down at the request of a few of the older riders. To anyone that has never ridden dirt track they think it is very easy. By the end of 15 laps some of these guys were having trouble lifting their foot to put back on the peg.
The Super Mini Moto TT, which is mainly comprised of 85cc 2 strokes saw Harlan Hildebrand taking both the heat and feature win. CJ McAdams was on Harlan’s rear wheel actually hitting him on the left turn into the infield. The resulting bump put CJ on the ground not once but twice. CJ rode like his nickname “Madman McAdams” to close the gap. CJ got close but ran out of laps.
XR100 Cup TT was the biggest class of the night with 10 riders. 4 strokes and DOT tires were the basic rules. Ex-dirt tracker who just came out of retirement of 30 years, Mike Lovewell was the cream of the field on his Ed Longacre tuned XR120. 2nd place went to Frank Rounds. Frank who rides both NEMM and NEDT Series was the brain child behind this event. Jeremy DeGrasse was the high placing NEMM rider finishing 3rd with a big smile on his face.
The XR100 Cup Short Track was all Bobby Bettencourt’s. While Bobby only dirt tracks occasionally, he has raced this bike for 4 years with great success. Local boys Mike Lovewell and Matt Fallon from Leominster, MA finished 2nd and 3rd.
For a first time event both series promoters were ecstatic with not only the turnout, but the close racing and great response from riders and fans. I’m sure there will be another Mini Madness at WVR for 2011. One of our thoughts is to have a Vintage Mini Concourse show. So many people I have talked to have a RUPP Roadster or SL70 sitting in their garage. An event like this would be a perfect fit to display the bikes we had as a youth. We also are talking about taking our NEDTS mini’s to Aaron Phinney’s Super Moto Track which is in Kezarr, ME on the N.H. border. Aaron bought an existing paved kart track and is expanding it into a full blown super moto track.

WICKED PISSA’ WEEKEND AT WACHUSETT

80 entries showed up for the New England Dirt Track Series event July 31st to remember Alex Lyskawa. Alex started racing at Wachusett as a young boy and switched to road racing, where he continued his winning ways. An unfortunate racing accident ended his career. His memory lives on through his family, friends and fellow racers. In honor of his memory $350 was collected toward a plaque at The Daytona Monument in Daytona Fla.

Despite the dry weather all week, the dedication of the track crew made for the best track in a couple years. A little bit of calcium and hard work by Craig Starzynski, Roger Savard, Jack Elliott, and grader man “Wild” Bill Wilkes made for a lot of passing and close action.

The best races of the night were between 2 young lions, Jamison Minor and Brad Marble, where they raced handlebar to handlebar in 5 classes. Brad won three 1st place finishes, open AM, amateur TT and sportsman. Jamison took 1st in 250 AM and amateur grand prix. These two riders had the crowd on their feet cheering after each race.

Not to be outdone the 85 and 125 class are 2 more barn burning classes; which when they line up it’s anyone’s game. The 85 class had C.J. “Mad Man” McAdams taking the win over Samantha Slingerland with “Speedy” Harlan Hildebrand in 3rd. In the 125 class the roles reversed with Harlan 1st, Samantha 2nd and C.J. 3rd.

The 100 to 160 four stroke class with youth and adult combined is gaining more popularity all the time. The 10 year olds are out on the track dicing wheel to wheel with their 50 year old idols and everyone leaves the track smiling. “Raging” Ricky Morage too k the win over Cody “Rattlesnake” Cormier and Don Prevost from Columbia MO taking 3rd.

We ran a new class called ‘Born to be Wild’. The requirements are you have to be at least 58 years of age. For the 1st race we had 5 riders signed up on bikes ranging from 125 Yamaha to a 600 Rotax. Joe Picardi was the cream of the crop, beating 2nd place Don Prevost with Dave Austyn in 3rd. The remaining races at WVR will have this popular class.

A big thank you to Paula Brisbois for taking over 200 dollars on the 50/50 raffle. 102 dollars raised goes towards the year end trophies. Successful races could not be accomplished without the dedicated help of Tina and Richard Perault on the starting line, Tom and Jason Hopkinson in the corners, Connie, Jane and Julie running the paper work and Mike Tinker who volunteered for the thankless job of pit steward.

There are 4 events left for the year, WVR so mark it on your calendar and make sure that you do not miss all of the action.

It has been a tough week, with sadness I hate to inform you we have lost 3 great people. While email is not the most personal way for this kind of news we feel it is important everyone knows.

Steve Poole passed away in his sleep Friday morning while working on the oil spill in Florida. Steve and I spoke at length the day of the Brockton Race and the next morning. His boss had given a bunch of the foreman there first day off is 80 something days, and treated them to the Jimmy Buffett Concert. Steve was very excited about the concert and also doing his part on the oil spill. Steve was a dedicated worker, and his years of training was being put to good use, he was in his element. I first met Steve and his close friends when Sideways Promotions teamed up with the United Bikers of Maine to do a 2 day race at the Bangor half mile. As with everything they did, it was a first class operation, and everything was well planned out. All of our correspondence at that point had been over the phone and emails with the UBM. George O’Neal and I drove into the fairgrounds and pulled up in time to see this big burly guy driving the water tanker stop in turn one to grab a beer. About that time I was just getting out of the van and saw the truck stop with the pump wide open dumping water all over turn one. I proceeded to let him know in no uncertain terms that crap like that was unacceptable. He probably should have choked me but in Steve’s way he told me it would not happen again and calmed me right down. That was a start of a long friendship and he was my go to guy, who I could count on to get things done. I wanted a 10,000 gallon water tanker and truck he made it happen. I needed to round up 600 hay bales in 3 day, Steve got it done. No matter what, trucks, tractors, dirt or rounding up qualified help he never let me down. I have many great memories of Steve and his family and he will be sorely missed. Complete funeral arrangements will be posted tomorrow.

Bob Coolbeth, Morgan’s dad and Kenny’s uncle passed away last week. When Sideways first started Bob, Justin and Morgan supported every race we had. Bob’s motorhome hated the ride to Canaan and always seemed to vapor lock in line at the pit gate. Everyone would pitch in to work on it, or we would end up towing it in to the pits. Bob loved racing, and loved helping other people. We all meet a lot of great people racing but there was something about Bob that just made him fun to be around. Maybe it was the miller lite we both drank and shared at many races watching all the Coolbeths. They spent many years supporting Sideways at races all over New England. We were down to Williams Grove PA, and Kenny was running 3rd in the National, his best spot at that time in his young career. We were all sitting up on turn three and Bob was so excited, it wasn’t until after the race that he realized he drank 24 beers in the 25 lap race! The Coolbeths have always been a close knit dedicated racing family and we are proud to been able to be a part of it.

Red LaBrie passed away last week at the age of 67 of emphysema. Red goes back to Bryar Motorsport park days, he owned Concord Honda and was the pit steward at the Sat. night races. He did not let you out one at a time and in order, there were 5 gates and he had a rope that he would fling across to let you onto the track in a mad dash. He loved motorcycles and motorcycle racing. At the end of the season he would bring bushels of corn for everyone to enjoy at the year end party. Red and his wife Gladys would travel all over the northeast, wherever there was a National. He had a large loving family, with several kids that raced. Concord Honda sponsored several riders, and even promoted some indoor concrete races in Concord NH with great success.

God Speed, Steve, Bob and Red, New England flat track will not be the same without you.

Brockton Fair Races July 11, 2010

Every race Sideways does is always an event, but racing during the fair
brings it to a whole new level. The sights, sounds and smells of the
carnival mixed in with race gas is just wicked cool. For the past few years
the Brockton Fairgrounds has booked us in. Twenty bucks a carload gets you
into the fair and allows you to watch the races for one price. Every year
the track is different depending on what events they have going on. Bobby
and his crew were able to give us a decent size track that held up very well
despite the weather. Hot, sunny and windy is a promoter's nightmare. The
combination just sucks the moisture out of the dirt forcing more stops for
track maintenance. Our 1:00pm start was delayed until 3:00pm due to the
ambulance showing up late, but once we started racing the action was hot and
heavy! Pictures at www.firstplacephoto.com <http://www.firstplacephoto.com/>

75 entries of motorcycles and quads made for 3 hours of non-stop action. Two new events added to the program were the Amt. Grand Prix and the "Dash for
Dave". For the Grand Prix we took 2 125's, 2 250's and 2 Open Amateur's for
a 5 lap sprint and staggered start for each size bike. Harlan Hildebrand on
his 125 took the whole shot with the pack on his rear wheel. Second place
through sixth were jostling for position with some awesome handle bar to
handle bar action. The first 3 laps saw positions 2 thru 6 shuffling in an
attempt to catch Harlan. Lap 4 positions settled down with Harlan winning
followed by C.J. McAdam, Craig Hall, Josh Paydos, Samantha Slingerland.

The "Dash for Dave" was sponsored by Jane Wood, Dave B's girlfriend. She put
up $500 towards a five rider, 5 lap dash. Qualifying was determined by the top 3 in the Open Premier Class and the two winners of the Sportsman heats.
It so happens that 14 year old Harlan Hildebrand qualified for both races.
Local boy and Bettencourt rider "Asa The Racer Irish" led all 5 laps for the
win, but behind him positions shuffled every lap. On lap 2 it was 4 wide
down the front straight! Harlan Hildebrand regained 2nd place in the
process. Lap 3 Fast Freddy Berryman tangled with Steve Hall, and Freddy hit
the deck in turn 2. Final results were; Irish, Hildebrand, Hall, Brad
Marble, and Berryman. All 5 riders got a present from Jane with as framed
picture of Dave B along with some cash.

The ATVs put on one heck of a show. While some complained that the track was slick, others were wheelying down the straight-away. Nine Open-Pro ATVs were
the last race of the day. These riders, no matter what track they are on,
always put on an exciting show. Even with a track smaller than what they are
used to; there was plenty of bumping, shoving, and passing! At the checkers,
there was Brian Pierce in 1st, Corby Marini 2nd, and Eric Kreis 3rd.

I would like to thank everyone involved in making the long day a success.
The regular Sideways crew was absent due to other obligations, so several
people stepped up and did a great job filling their shoes. Mike Tinker did
an exceptional job starting the races. Julie Starzynski, Ashley McKenna, and
her friend played an important role in scoring the races. New comer, Don Capri along with the ex racing family of Walter, Joey, and Andy Reddington
volunteered for the thankless job of pit stewards. We did have the support
of Connie Giammalvo, corner flagmen; Tom and Jason Hopkinson; and announcer
Zeke "Bucky Thunder" from the booth.

Racing at The Brockton Fairgrounds is always a blast, but during the fair it
adds a whole new dimension to the event. With the talk of casinos and slots
coming to MA, the fairground is caught in limbo as to what they can do in
the future. We tentatively have an event scheduled for Oct.10th. Please
continue to check the website for updates.

The New England Dirt Track Series round 6 rolled into Wachusett Valley Riders Club on a hot steamy day, June 19th. Since the Coolbeth School in May the track has seen major improvements. Thanks to Rick Marshal from Crow Hill MX, he lent us his spare grater and Bill Wilks fine tuned the track. A few club members have spent considerable time mowing, weed whacking and days watering the track. The hard work of these volunteers produced the best surface in a couple of years. Track electricians Bryan and Bernie McKenna added two new lights to the back straight and are planning more upgrades to the electrics. I wanted to thank everyone involved for their help.

Even with a slightly smaller turnout the racing was phenomenal! Sam “The Shredder” Slingerland continued her winning ways by taking 1st in the 125 class and making the podium in the 85 and 250AM. Mark Methe and Joe Picardi were wheel to wheel in the dino calss. At one point Joe did lead half a lap, but Mark’s inside line got him back in the lead for the win. The amateur TT was a dog fight from start to finish between “Bad” Brad Marble and Jamison Minor. Jamison was pushing and shoving coming into the infield section without success. He did pull even coming out of the right hander and over the jump. Despite Jamison’s repeated attempts, Brad rode smooth and smart for an impressive win.

POSTED JUNE 13

Mother Nature was the only winner Saturday. I headed up Friday morning to prepare for Saturday's race. Myself and the track owner had been watching the weather channel all week. Heavy rain Friday night left the track very wet but we knew with a little sunshine we would be in great shape for 4:30 practice. At noon time there was a light drizzle happening and the weather forecast were all over the place. The Rochester 1/2 mile is a stone dust surface that can take all kinds of water. Big Daddy's is a fine clay that turns to mud without a lot of rain. Our first concern is for the safety of the riders due to track conditions. Even a light mist on a clay track with motorcycles can spell disaster. Myself and the track owner made a decision about 1:00 to cancel. Being that Rumney is in a dead cell phone area, getting the word out took awhile. I immediately put the update on my answering machine, called some local radio stations, rally headquarters and eventually it was posted on Big Daddy's website. Seeing as my crew was enroute no one was available to change my website. I apologize for anyone's inconvenience. We cancelled not because of lack of riders, they come regardless. We cancelled because of a questionable race track, no sun to dry the track and all the forecasts called for some form of precipitation during the night. We take a lot of pride in being a part of Laconia Motorcycle and Race Week since 1974 as a fan and 20 years as a race promoter. With the conditions we were given there was no way to put on the level of show Sideways Promotions and the riders usually do for you spectators. We are known to get a race done in conditions other promoters would have given up on. It is a painstaking decision to make but Mother Nature has the final say.
Sunday night at Jolly Roger Moto Sport Park Rt. 10 E. Lempster, N.H. despite drizzle and threaten clouds in the morning bikes hit the track at 4:15 in the afternoon for practice! Due to the track crews’ persistence the high banks oval was in perfect shape. The heats and features went off perfectly with no delays with the races ending at 8:15. Since Marco has his own race crew I was able to spend some time talking to the spectators that rode in on their bikes. The feedback and conversations were interesting and informative. A group of sport bike riders from Quebec and several N.H. residents who had never been to Jolly's brought friends from all over the U.S. to view the races for the first time. I had some people that were bummed about Saturday night drive all the way from North Conway, N.H. to Jolly Roger's for Sunday, which is a long ways over back roads. Everyone was very appreciative of the races and said they would be back.
The interaction and support of these people is what keeps Laconia going. They all had a common theme and that is they want to ride to more events and destinations. Even though Friday and Saturday was nerve racking Sunday finished on a high note. As the spectators were leaving, beers were being cracked, M80 firecrackers were being tossed and blue sky was poking through the clouds! Thank you for your support and see you next year.

New Track added to Laconia MC Week Dirt Track Series

Big Daddy’s Speed Bowl on rt 25 in Rumney NH is excited to be kicking off 2 nights of exciting motorcycle and atv flat track racing during the 87th Annual Laconia Motorcycle Rally and Race Week. Sideways Promotions last ran at Rumney, formerly known then as “The Pines Speedway” around 1999. Since
then several promoters leased the facility keeping the long history alive. Fall 2009 saw a new enthusiastic racer turned promoter come in with a bold plan. Mike “Big Daddy” Rivers has been building a brand new facility starting from the light poles inside to the far edges of the pit and spectator parking outside. Mikes commitment to his weekly dirt cars is evident by his uniting the 3 area tracks and their rules. Mike and his crew are taking that same enthusiasm and putting it into Sideways Promotions race. Pete Giammalvo, President of Sideways Promotions said, “I have been following the tracks progress. Everyone can’t wait to put a wheel on that clay banked ¼ mile”. Riders from Canada and the east coast are coming, hoping to take some New England cash home.
The racing action will be fast and furious typical handlebar to handlebar banging short track action. As of press time, New England’s own 3 time AMA National Dirt Track Champion plans to compete on his potent Bettencourt’s Honda 450. Massachusetts native Shane Narbonne will attempt to do double duty of road racing and dirt tracking if the schedules allow it. Shane is on a roll from Daytona where he had top finishes on the dirt and pavement riding for North Reading Honda. Asa Irish and Bryan McKenna are always in contention to finish on the box. These 2 south shore boys stepped up their programs over the winter so I expect good results. 19 year old Kyle Marble from Halifax Ma who finished in the top 3 in NEDTS expert last season is getting his AMA Pro license this season. Kyle’s enthusiasm and hard charging style will give the top riders some concerns. Then you got the veteran of not only New England but the northeast and also on a roll from Daytona. Dudley ma native Roger Durkee started his career of winning in Alstead NH in the late 60’s and now at age 47 is still winning championships. Roger’s latest accomplishment was winning the 40+ class in Daytona against some very fast younger riders. His ability to read a race track and find a unique fast line makes him not only a joy to watch, but always puts him up front. Roger and Kenny have dominated northeast motorcycle dirt track racing for 40 years winning many Championships. When Sideways Promotions got its start back 21 years ago at Canaan USA Speedway Roger was in his prime and Kenny was a young fast teenager who wanted to win. We are proud of these men now and of the riders before who bravely step up to chase their dream of a National Expert on The AMA Dirt Track Series. You can see these boys and a bunch of young lions with stars in their eyes and dreams of following in the champs steel shoe Saturday June 12th at Big Daddy’s Speed Bowl Rt 25 Rumney. Spectator gate opens at 4, Practice 4:30, Heats 5:30, Features 8:00. Adults $10, kids 6-12 $5, under 5 free!
Charlie and June Elliott are going to be Honorary Grand Marshalls June 12. They took Sideways Promotions under their wing 21 years ago when we started racing their track in Canaan NH Opening Ceremonies will be between 7:30 and 8.
The rolling thunder show heads 1 hour southwest to Jolly Roger Motorsports located on rt 10 in East Lempster NH for Sunday June 13. Jolly as it’s affectionally called, is a high banked 1/5th mile oval nestled in a hollow between a mountain and The Rooster Tails Grille. The seating is awesome from many vantage points and free camping is always allowed. Jolly starts with a mx at 10 am and flat track practice is 5, races as six. Adult tickets are $10 with a child discount.
Please contact us for more information.
You can get a racing membership or more information by contacting:
Peter Giammalvo at 1-978-874-1732 or e-mail peterg11@verizon.net

SCHEDULE CHANGE: The Coolbeth School has been changed from May 15-16 to May 22-23. The NEDTS race at Jollys has been moved to May 29. We will reset the youth school date. July 11 date for Brockton Fair is official. We have from 12-6 in the afternoon. Saturday June 12 is at Big Daddy’s Speedbowl in Rumney NH the first week of Laconia. I’m beating the bushes for a pro purse. $100 gets you 2 pit passes and your name in the program. A good turnout of spectators will be a big asset to having a Rochester ½ mile in 2011. I’ll have posters the end of April and it’s important to cover New England, especially an hour radius from Rumney

POSTED FEB 18:
Dave B’s Daytona plaque donations are$200 away from our goal! There is still time to get your name on the donor’s certificate. We are not asking for any large amounts, $10 will work. Please make checks payable to Connie Giammalvo. Send to Connie Giammalvo, 95 Sargent Rd. Westminster Ma 01473. While the original plan was to have everything in place this March, we ran into a problem with one of the pictures. Transferring from picture to granite it lost the clarity. Since December when pictures were chosen, some better ones were found. So while there is still an official Daytona 200 ceremony Wednesday March 3 @ 11 it will not have Davids plaques. We’ll regroup and plan a bigger one for 2011.

The WVR meeting scheduled for Thursday night Feb 18 has been cancelled, March 25 will be next one at Mason’s Hall in Winchendon 7:pm

The status of the ice races for the 2010 season is up in the air at this point. We submitted the contract to the club in November, unfortunately they waited until after their meeting to let us know that they wanted to increase their rental fee 20% along with a few other changes. I requested a meeting with them ASAP and got the response that they couldn’t meet with me until December 30th. Now without a contract we weren’t able to get any fencing in the ground before it froze, so that could be a big issue. Should we be able to finalize a contract with the Club tomorrow night, the ability to get the insurance for the event becomes difficult with the holiday & short notice. Our insurer charges extra if the event is less than a week away.
The first race scheduled for this weekend is cancelled due to the above issues regardless of the ice conditions. Rest assured we are actively looking at other options so that we can get some racing in this year. After meeting with the club I will get an update up on the website, if not an email update.

Happy New Years to Everyone….

Hey everyone I hope you all had a good Christmas and have good plans for New Years. If you’ve read the first email I sent you can see that we are having some difficulties with the club this year. The biggest issue is that they want to increase the rental and security deposit 20%. I really don’t understand the mentality of increasing costs to cover declining revenue in these economic times. As a business that needs to remain competitive and viable we need to cut our costs and our customers wouldn’t tolerate price increases. They also want a few other changes like another days notification of cancellations and a quicker cleanup after the races. I think there are a few misunderstandings on their part that need correction – as we had all of the fencing down two weeks after the last scheduled race while there was still some snow on the ground and ice on the pond. There was a complaint that I’m aware of a week after we took down the fencing that the fencing was in the way of the fly fishermen. Phantom fencing I guess? Having been a club member for over 20 years I thought that maybe they would’ve either requested my presence at the meeting where the decided to change the contract or at least called me so the I could’ve come down – I live less than 10 minutes away and at least three members of the BOD know this.
I had expected to have everything completed before Thanksgiving, but this has thrown us completely off. I’ll keep you all posted. I’m interested in other locations to put on the races, so if anyone has any ideas or contacts. This SUCKS!

Masons lodge Wednesday Dec 16 at 7
The lodge is on rt 12 heading north out of Winchendon. It’s after the American legion and before wheels in motion on the same side

The last meeting 13 people showed up and while I didn’t cover everything some good came out of it. What I’m going to talk about is mainly WVR and Sideways end of business. I need to get this off my chest, it’s not directed at any single person. The season was going decent till Brockton’s rainout and then wvr’s rain/rescheduled dirt track jam and enduro cross. Those 3 events lost money basically got me scrambling for money. I decided to smile through the banquet as that is the celebration of everyone’s dedication and success. I stressed the week before the banquet because so many people missed the deadline. When I emailed that I only had 102 replies, 18 were sideways help! With many calls, emails we got 150 people. Why should I have to do that? There are 2 rules about promoting. It’s should be fun and it should be profitable, if it isn’t why are you doing it?

I seriously thought about selling wvr or turning it into a mx practice track in the fall. Promoting is what I do, dirt track is my favorite. For 2010 I decided to give it hell, chase sponsors and setup a race schedule. Things have to change though. I’ve heard it all, we are all busier, the economy sucks, etc. I’m going to build wvr workdays into the schedule so people can plan it in. I’m going to make an updated list so people can pick a project. 20 members in 1 day can do a lot of work. WVR really needs a sprucing up, it’s our place to show it off! With a little bit of work we’ll be proud when riders come from other districts. Rt 12 is also a main road into Winchendon, together we can make a nice first impression. I’m trying hard to unite everyone and add excitement to our program, well 2010 is the year! We need to look forward and plan. We are always trying to recruit new track officials. We need a backup announcer, starter and score people. Someday Tina and Dick won’t be able to make it and then where are we?

Many of you take flyers to pass out which is great. If everyone put up only 4 or 5 flyers central new England would be covered. Collectively a slight effort by everyone adds up to a huge amount. 100 adult’s extra thru wvr or jolly’s each race is huge to the bottom line. I’m open to suggestions/constructive criticism, and everyone’s feedback. WVR was created to be able to practice and perfect dirt tracking, our sport. The track was carved out a woodlot by a group of members like yourself, some who are still involved. While better clay is my holy grail search, widening the track has improved the racing immensely. Landscaping and painting will be the agenda in the spring.
To get to the spring I’m working with the off road riders about a winter enduro cross series. 3 races, January, February and March after Daytona. We left the infield enduro track which they’ll ride through the snow so all we have to do is plow the parking lots. The most pressing issue right now is money. The insurance signup fees and first race payment total about $1500. We are on a $200 a month payment plan to the town for back taxes plus the monthly mortgage payment. The lost revenue in the fall really is showing up now. Everyone can help by paying their $40 NEDTS 2010 membership now. The $100 wvr practice membership is welcome anytime. Back when the town shut us down we came up with a Life Membership for wvr. $500 gets a life membership. After 5 years you pay only practice day fee. I believe we have about 20-25 life members. Also remember the banquet program had Christmas/birthday pre-entry gift certificates. I’m asking for your support to get thru December and January till we go racing. Money will be accepted now and I’ll mail form after. Schedules will be mailed end of january

At December’s meeting we’ll decide about meetings in winter. Meetings will have a 50/50 raffle plus 1 free entry as incentive to come. I have a couple ideas about the kart program to improve it. I’ll give you a prepped track from 3 to 4:30, you drivers arrange for an emt and staff to run whatever laps/ races you want between that time. We’ll water the track as needed. I also want to run a couple 4 wheel Fridays with karts and slingshots during the summer. We talked about a clone (stock Chinese motor) class for kids and adults plus the 2 classes we run now. I’m looking into either an arena cross or super cross race at the end of the season. We’ll haul in new clay to build a track, run a race or 2 then build another endurocross track for the winter if this one works out.

LOOKING FOR. A 20’ construction trailer with a garage door in the back to rent for the winter series

Take 20! – FMF Helping Riders Through Tough Times
FMF Racing announces a never before seen promotion to give back to our fellow riders who have made us number one. I started FMF back in 1973 because I loved riding motorcycles. Delivering the highest level of performance and quality is what drives us. What this means is you the consumer can walk into your local dealership slash the retail price of all FMF 4-stroke exhaust by 20%. Whether it’s a dirt bike, quad, sport bike, side by side and regardless of year, even 2010 – ALL 4-stroke exhaust are 20% off.

FMF is like no other exhaust manufacturer. Located in the So.Cal. hotbed of motocross, FMF has nearly vertical manufacturing – everything is made 100% in-house utilizing American made material. This puts FMF in the unique position to control production cost and oversee quality without relying on third party vendors or outsourcing. By doing it all ourselves, we can take this unique opportunity to offer a retail incentive at a time when every rider could use it most.

Here’s how the TAKE 20 Program works:
- Take 20% off the retail price of all FMF 4-stroke exhaust.
- The program starts November 15, 2009 and ends March 31, 2010.

Examples:
- Full Titanium 4.1 Megabomb System Retail $849.99. Take 20% $679.99!
- Powercore 4 with Stainless Powerbomb System Retail $499.99. Take 20% $399.99!

That’s it! No coupons or mail-in rebates. You walk into your local dealer and walk out with one of the top aftermarket performance exhausts made – at 20% off.

Saturday Nov 28 2pm at The Carriage House rt 12 Winchendon MA. The carriage house is ¼ mile north of the intersection of rt 140 & 12 near the track. I want input on race dates and have some ideas on improving the kart program I want to run by everyone. I want to come up with realistic project list and plan to make it happen. We together have built a pretty decent short track and tt. As racers and club members we need to pull together to strengthen not only Wvr but Sideways Promotions and the NEDTS

WVR FALL CLEANUP SUNDAY NOV 22 AT 10AM - BRING CHAINSAWS TO TRIM TREES AND RECHARGABLE DRILLS WITH SOCKETS SETUPS TO BREAK APART THE TRAILER OF BIKES TO SCRAP.

We had 39 entries in 6 classes, even with spectators it didn't come close to paying the bills. As for more logs, less mud. We were cutting trees Saturday to fill in spots! We talked about firing the sprinkler system up during the Pro's for a little man made "rain" I joked around earlier about a "Tucky hole. Thank you to Jeff and Eric Wood for their input during the week and everyone's "rock garden" adjustments Sunday after practice. I want to thank everyone for working together the first race. A lot of great people and suggestions.
So where do we go from here? It was brought to my attention about a winter series, one race a month jan, feb and march after Daytona? I will need time to rework my dirt track and TT back into shape. This week We are going to regrade everything filling ruts and repacking ramps, jumps etc. WVR is 26 acres and we have a 1/2 mile single track trail through woods we could incorporate with the arena.

Jolly Rogers is cancelled for October 3 due to weather forecast and rescheduled for October 24. This includes the mx and dirt track.
The non points race at Rattle Snake in Rumney for Sunday oct 4 is still on at this time. I’ll try to find out more about Sunday.
Oct 5th is a meeting with the Winchendon selectman to go over a neighbors complaint. We feel we have everything under control but it also proves we need to remain on the ball with our exhausts.
The November 1 ATV Rodeo at WVR is cancelled due to lack of input from the atv groups.

Fall Happenings

Sunday September 27th is the Brockton Fall Brawl featuring motorcycle and ATV short track and TT. The fairgrounds is enthusiastically working with us to make a larger short track with good clay. While the fairgrounds costs more than a regular race, once we have a permanent track and surface bigger events will follow. Please work with us this year to make the 27th a success to jump start next season. Jolly Roger’s last race is Saturday October 3rd. October 4th there will be a non-points race at Rattlesnake Motor Drome in Rumney N.H. We raced at Rumney years ago and since then the track was totally rebuilt and this summer a new owner has taken it over. The track surface is good and the size is perfect for our racing. I hope a good amount of riders support this so we all can get a feel for being involved as a points events in 2010. October 9th is a Sling Shots/Karts race at WVR. Sling Shots are small dirt modifieds with 40hp v twin briggs motors. The last April Friday night show proved it might be worth while to run once a month. October 10th is WVR and NEDTS last points event of 2009. The race at WVR will run double points just to spice things up. October 11th is our fall club cook-out at WVR, everyone is invited to eat and ride. Non members are $5.00. October 17th is the “Souls of the Damned Dirt Track Jam”, the big one! Youth classes, One Amt, One Expert, Vintage and Old Farts classes in short track and TT. Trying to raise some money for the expert classes over and above the 100% payback. I am also talking to several AMA Expert riders about showing up. Daytime swap meet/vintage bike and rider display. I am working on some past N.E. champions to participate. The racing will start around 4 or 5 and will see the return of “The Queen of Dirt 2009”. The rules are simple, 160cc max. air-cooled 4-strokes with the King and his court crowning QoD 2009. The adult stupidity will continue with Bucky Thunder jumping something in his monster truck. Cannons and Thunder Clownz will round out the evening. Don’t forget $100 for the best costume chosen during the Horribles Parade. October 31st. WVR is branching out into the enduro cross competition. We are going to haul in several new truck loads of clay and then make the nastiest hare scrambles course inside the arena. Rocks, logs, loader tires and a real mud hole, no namby pamby birdbath, but a real bike swallowing ‘tucky hole as in Winchentucky. Practice starts at 4 and the races at 6. Classes are 160 and smaller air-cooled. Novice, amt. exp. and pro are run what ya brung cc. Cool first place trophies, money for amt, exp and pro plus a trophy for the pro winner guaranteed your significant other won’t let you put it in your living room! Who will be the King of Toy Town? November 1st at WVR is an ATV Rodeo on the same course. Several classes of utility quads dukin’ it out in this first time event. A weighted transfer sled will be setup in another area for more competition. These two events will run regardless of weather which will give the winners definite bragging rights for a year.

I am trying to schedule the awards banquet for early November. Hopefully the weather isn’t too bad and everyone can play on the track Sunday after the banquet.

Wachusett has seen a huge ton of improvements this year thanks to a bunch of people. The downside is that some very important projects and vehicle maintenance has got put off. The end of the season is crazy busy, but I would like to find a day where ten to twelve people minimum can commit to a work day before everything freezes up. This would give us a huge jumpstart for next spring.

On a political note. Vice President Joe Biden was quoted as saying, “The stimulus package has exceeded our expectations”. Unemployment is up, Foreclosure’s are up, WTF! Our federal government doesn’t set very high standards. All Federal employees where supposed to get a 2.4 percent raise but Obama lowered it to 2 percent even. On a state level OUR MA senators and representatives got their $3200 to $35,000 automatic raises. American people are taking pay cuts to keep their jobs and our elected officials just don’t get it! This goes for both sides of the aisle. There aare a small handful of elected officials working for the people. My suggestion is keep the honest ones and vote the rest out. Let’s end the good ole boy cycle and start fresh, this countries survival depends on it!

2009 Aaron Creamer Memorial Short Track to Benefit Winchendon Youth Recreation Sat Aug 15

I met Aaron Creamer and his family in 1988. It was about a year after my diving accident which paralyzed me from the chest down. I had raced motorcycles for 14 years and cars for 5 before my accident plus back in the late 70’s I promoted ice races for the city of Gardner’s Winter Carnival. I was meeting with the family to work on bringing motorcycle dirt track back to New England. The old Bryar Motorsport Park in Loudon was sold and New Hampshire International Speedway was being built. Our only race track in New England was now a parking lot. The Creamer family along with many others now had to travel to either Schnectady or Binghampton N.Y. to race.
A track was located in Canaan N.H. and a 3 race deal was struck. While not financially successful it was emotionally a success for everyone. Dirt track was back in New England! Sideways Promotions and The New England Dirt Track Series was started in 1989. At that time, Aaron was riding 60’s and 80’s. The 2 families formed a bond that continues to this day. We spent countless hours together over the years working on bikes, traveling to races, practicing at Wachusett Valley. During those years as Aaron went from a child to a boy to a man, all he ever wanted to do was be a Professional Racer. Not a guy who had a part time job and raced but a full time Pro. He accomplished his goal in 03. Aaron was following the AMA National circuit! For awhile he traveled alone because his hectic schedule didn’t fit in with friends work. He did everything on the bike and gained the respect of a huge following from around the country. He never forgot his roots, coming home as often as he could to see friends and family. He would race locally and do riding schools for kids like he had been for years.
Aaron died Aug 8, 2004 racing in Sturgis South Dakota. His love of life, friends and family didn’t make it any easier but it was solace that he went doing what he loved. He once said, “If I die racing, I know I’ll die happy.” It’s his infectious spirit that literally affected thousands and thousands of people around the world. There are other races named in his honor. Aaron was a Leominster boy and along with many other families put a lot of sweat equity building Wachusett Valley Riders. The match of Aaron continuing to help local kids and be remembered was perfect. 2006 due to nasty weather early we only were able to donate $260. 2007 we raised $1100. The total so far including 2008 is $4095. Every dime raised either pays a bill or is donated. WVR and it’s club members do not make any profit what so ever.
There are several ways to be involved. To help offset the costs Wachusett Valley Riders Club is selling sponsorships, $25, $50 and $100 levels. $25 gets your name in the program, $50 gets you in the program and a Aaron Creamer trophy, $100 gets everything plus a banner at the races. I would love to make a $3500 donation to the youth program this year. Wachusett Valley Riders Club Rt 12, Winchendon MA. Saturday August 15, Practice 4:00, races 5:30. Adults $10, kids under 16 free after 5:30. To be a sponsor or for more info contact me call 978-874-1732 or email peterg11@verizon.net

FOR RELEASE IMMEDIATELY
SLINGSHOTS DEBUT WITH NEW ENGLAND DOUBLE HEADER AT WACHUSETTS VALLEY AND JOLLY ROGER MOTORSPORTS PARK ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, JULY 24 & 25.

Westminster, MA. This weekend Friday and Saturday, July 24 -25 will see Slingshots racing in Massachusetts and New Hampshire for the first time ever. Sideways Promotions President Pete Giammalvo has watched the popularity of these vehicles soar the last couple years. Last fall a test was held at the Wachusett Valley Riders Club 1/5th Mile in Winchendon, MA with great results.

Connecticut driver Kenny Johnson deemed WVR “very race able.” These spec cars are powered by modified and sealed v – twin Briggs & Stratton Vanguard motors. Fully suspended these vehicles look like miniature dirt Modifieds and the v twin motor has a nice muffled bark to it. The goal of Sideways Promotions is to lay the groundwork this season with a New England Series in 2010. Drivers and their families are traveling from New York and Pennsylvania for this historic weekend.

Another group making the weekend tour is the Eastern Outlaw Quarter Sprint Racing Club. They are a small racing club that races at Hillside Raceway in Westport, Ma. The Hillside club races Open Wheel Quarter Sprint race cars that are the same size as 250cc Mini Sprint cars. They have two divisions in that club, one division runs cars that are 11 hp, methanol powered, Briggs & Stratton flat-top racing engines. The other division runs 11 hp, methanol powered, Honda overhead cam racing engines.

Tickets are only $10 at each track for adults. Jolly Roger Moto-Sport Park, in E. Lempster, NH, is a little over one hour north of Winchendon Ma. Both tracks can soak up a lot of water so don’t let a little rain shower scare you away from this exciting event.

Coolbeth Cross Training School Back for 2009

The 17th Annual Ben Campanale Laconia ½ Mile is on hold for 2009.
I did everything I could do secure sponsorship for 09 but it the end the economy won out. My faithful New England Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealers association, have been major sponsor of Sideways Promotions and New England Dirt Track Series for 15 years. Due to the economy they regretfully could not continue to support my events. I do want to thank them for their past support, it was them along with a few other dealerships that made Ben Campanale ½ mile possible. I spent 7 months working 3 different groups to put a Rochester race on for 09. Laconia Motorcycle Week will revive into a bigger event with more racing than before! I am not giving up on the race entirely, but will continue to secure sponsorship for the race in 2010. I want to thank all you fans and riders for you support in having some very successful races. It put New England on the map, showing the rest of the country just how great our program is. Another very special thing, is that I have got to know a lot of the riders in the National Circuit as good friends.
Sideways Promotions will concentrate on the short tracks, especially
4th Annual Competition Riders Dinner
This dinner has the riders that were a part of new england’s motorcycle history in it’s infancy. The men that rode their only motorcycle in all events. Senator Kennedys non response

Dear Mr. Giammalvo:
I want you to know how much I appreciate the fact that you took the time to write to me about the Consumer Product Saftey Act.. All too often, citizens of our country choose to be part of the "silent majority," in spite of the many issues of concern to them.
It is primarily through correspondence such as yours that I am able to obtain the insights and understand the needs and priorities of my constituents and people throughout the country. I intend to do all I can to be an effective Senator in meeting the many challenges we face.
It is my hope that we will be able to make progress on issues of special concern to you and so many other Americans, and I thank you again for your letter.
Sincerely,
Edward M. Kennedy

WVR Work Party April 11. It’s a week early but we need to take advantage of the early spring.
While the track is still wet, there is work that can be done with fencing and cleanup. The first event at Wachusett is but a month away! Once May is here, we are off and running. Please contact me if you can make it the 11th. April 19 will be another cleanup day AND maybe an open practice!

Pete

SCHEDULE POSTED WVR & SCHEDULE PAGE

NEWSLETTER JANUARY
The ice race scheduled for Jan 3 was cancelled. We had ice but with this crazy weather it’s not very thick. We want to make sure that the ice and pit areas are sufficient to protect your screws. We are planning for Jan 10, as of Jan 6 we had over 6 inches on the pit straight and 3 on the street side. Getting to this point has been way more work than anticipated. We learned a ton and have a handle on it now. We are looking for 2” electric pumps, especially 1 high hp and pressure for the sprinkler system in the summer. The work we did on the oval last fall is really going to widen the passing zones.
I’m looking for feedback in several areas. Marco and I have the schedule 99% done, I’m waiting on a couple things. Jolly Rogers is building a TT course using the oval and infield. He will be running some strictly quad events running both tracks.
We talked about adjusting the Quad classes for 09. Mixing amateurs and experts has created unsafe situations for all. Keep in mind there is not time to add a bunch of classes. Please email me direct and then I’ll post what comes in, this should eliminate arguments among riders. peterg11@verizon.net
WVR points races. I plan to run the complete expanded kart program starting at 3:30 or 4. So that the karts have time between races I’m thinking of putting the 50cc kids classes in between. This would get the karts and 50’s done by 4:30 – 5. The karts are all running smooth dirt slicks which will pack the track in perfect.
Halloweena X5, I’m looking for suggestions on improving the show better. The stupidity level is up there but refining classes for the short track/tt program so that spectators flock to it is key. Would a Sunday be better? Just a TT?
Billboards are available for $600 for 2 years then $200 per year after, The $600 includes the price of the sign.
Friday July 24 is a kart and Slingshot race at wvr. This event is testing the waters to see how it works out. We tested a slingshot at wvr last fall with impressive results. Slingshots are a bigger than a kart with suspension and a v twin briggs motor making 40hp. They look like a miniature dirt modified. www.slingshots.com . I’m sure the entries will be less than a regular race so spectators and sponsors are key. July 25 the slingshots and quads will be racing at Jolly Rogers.
Endurocross what is it? http://promoto.tv/exfinals.html Basically a man made hare scramble in an arena with rocks, logs, water holes and other obstacles. The arena will be at wvr after the Halloweena X5. We have almost everything we need to build it. I have thrown the idea out on a couple dirt bike websites and the interest is high. I’m also talking to some people about a atv utility jamboree using the same course along with a pulling sled. After the event we’ll bring in some new clay and regrade the entire infield and track. The dirt track is and will be the main focus but as a club we need to explore our options.
Everyone has their favorite local websites. I have found some good sites that cater to off road or street enthusiasts. I am asking that everyone send me new England/new york websites. I can send my link/schedule out to them.
Race entries are going up slightly for Sideways Promotions wvr races. I have tried to stay the same but we all know everything has gone up. For comparison in 1987 Expert sign up was $25 and Amateur was $20 plus $10 pit pass. A Top level Rotax was $5000. NEDTS membership will be $35 which compared to most other racing organizations is cheap. Race entries will be $35 for the oval and $25 for the TT. WVR membership for practice will remain the same $100 for the first riding member and $25 there after with a maximum of $150 for a family. As a way for the club to get through the winter we have come up with an incentive that saves you full members and generates winter revenue. $100 members pay $180 before Feb 15 and that will cover membership AND practices for 2009. For each additional riding member it’s the usual $25 plus $80 for a total of $105. With at least 5 months of practice this is quite a savings plus Wednesdays just sign in and run, no money. For those that don’t do the incentive program WVR practice fee will be $15 for members. Non members fee is $50 for bikes/karts. This makes the track available for people traveling a long distance coming once or twice a year. The track will be prepped. For other small vehicle testing call for pricing.
Your NEDTS racing number will be held till March 1, after that numbers are not guaranteed. I announced last year that all amateurs will run yellow backgrounds with black numbers in 09. Pro’s will run white plates with black or red numbers.
I want to remind everyone that I have a for sale/wanted page on www.sidewayspromo.com You can list anything for free, if it sells a small donation to me would be nice but not mandatory.

IMPORTANT WVR ICE RACING INFO. DISCOUNT SPECTATOR PRICES START AFTER 4PM! ADULTS $10, KIDS UNDER 16 FREE!!
Ice racing, Getting to this point has been way more work than anticipated. We learned a ton and have a handle on it now. The next race Jan 31 should see heavy hitters Ken Coolbeth and Matt Weidman looking for double wins.
I’m also talking to some people about a atv utility Rodeo using the same course along with a pulling sled.

JAN 8
RACES CANCELLED AT WVR TILL JAN 17
Due to more snow forecast for Saturday afternoon we have decided to plow and pump at the track Sunday now at 11:00. Anyone with a plow with skids on the bottom would be a big help. The weather forecast for next week is cold! The phone is ringing off the hook! The Framer class is getting more entries all the time.
Thursday jan 16 we are meeting at the masons lodge on rt 12 Winchendon at 6:30
Pete

Wednesday we spent 7 hour in covering turn 4 banks with white tyvek and plowing the
track. Turn 4 towards turn does not have enough ice to race on. The work
everyone did today should have rectified our sun issues. I'm very confident
for jan 17.

Hello all, Jan 7

Please check Thursday afternoon to see if we are running Jan 10. We had a leak on turn 4 infield which resulted in a small channel across the track. We are going up tomorrow to work on that and several other things. I WILL NOT race if there is a chance of hitting dirt. Thank you for your understanding!
